Ingredients:
– 12 oz (340 g) spaghetti
– 1 lb (450 g) ground beef or Italian sausage
– 1 small onion, finely chopped
– 2 cloves garlic, minced
– 1 can (24 oz/680 g) marinara or spaghetti sauce
– 1 can (14.5 oz/410 g) diced tomatoes, drained
– 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning
– Salt and pepper, to taste
– 1 cup ricotta cheese
– 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
– 2 cups shredded mozzarella cheese
– 1/4 cup chopped fresh basil or parsley (optional)
Preparation:
- Cook Spaghetti:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Cook the spaghetti according to the package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside. - Prepare the Meat Sauce:
In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef or Italian sausage until browned. Drain any excess fat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic to the skillet, cooking until the onion is translucent. - Add Sauce Ingredients:
Stir in the marinara or spaghetti sauce, diced tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper. Simmer for about 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld. - Mix the Cheeses:
In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese and grated Parmesan cheese. Set aside. - Assemble the Casserole:
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked spaghetti with the meat sauce. Mix well to ensure the spaghetti is evenly coated with the sauce. - Layer in Baking Dish:
Lightly grease a 9×13 inch (23×33 cm) baking dish. Spread half of the spaghetti mixture in the bottom of the dish. Dollop the ricotta cheese mixture over the spaghetti and spread gently. Sprinkle with half of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Top with the remaining spaghetti mixture and finish with the remaining mozzarella cheese. - Bake:
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 20 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. - Serve:
Garnish with chopped fresh basil or parsley, if using. Allow the casserole to cool for a few minutes before serving.
Enjoy your hearty and delicious spaghetti casserole!
